Introduction
If you're looking to boost your immune system, here are seven of my favorite immune boosting herbs.
1. Astragalus
Number one on my list is Astragalus, which has been used for over a thousand years to help tonify the immune system. It’s also known for its effectiveness in supporting the body during upper respiratory tract infections.
2. Echinacea
Next on my list is Echinacea, also known as the purple coneflower. It was one of the most potent herbal medicines used as a natural antibiotic before the advent of conventional antibiotics. The medicinal properties are found in the root of the Echinacea plant, which you may even have in your garden, like I do.
3. American Ginseng
Number three on my list is American Ginseng. This herb helps tonify the immune system and acts as an adaptogen. What that means is that it supports the body during times of stress. Often, when you catch a cold, flu, or another illness, it comes after periods of high stress. American Ginseng helps regulate cortisol levels, strengthening immunity and aiding the body in coping with stress.
4. Althaea
Number four on my list of immune-boosting herbs is Althaea, also known as marshmallow root. This isn’t the fluffy treat but the herbal medicine, which is considered a demulcent herb. It helps break up mucus and is fantastic for soothing sore throats and irritated mucus membranes. If you have a sore throat, drinking marshmallow tea or taking the herbal medicine can be very effective. Personally, I open up the capsule of marshmallow and combine it with other herbal medicines, then take it with a little water. It’s great for coating the throat and fighting off bad bacteria.
5. Oregano
Number five on my list is Oregano. I’m referring to the whole plant, not just oregano oil drops, which can be harsh on the liver and gallbladder. The entire oregano plant has natural medicinal properties, acting as a natural antibiotic. It helps eliminate harmful organisms and is especially effective against issues like Candida and parasites, which can compromise immunity. I love incorporating oregano into my routine for its powerful benefits.
6. Black Walnut
Number six on my list is Black Walnut. Like oregano, it helps eliminate parasites and their eggs. It also supports the immune system by killing off harmful bacteria, making it a powerful herb for overall immune health.
7. Cloves
Number seven on my list is Cloves. Cloves are fantastic for eliminating parasites and their eggs, as well as killing off harmful bacteria. They help remove unwanted organisms that can affect our gut microbiome and even our mouth. An unhealthy microbiome can negatively impact our immune system, since over 80% of our immunity is linked to having a healthy gut. Cloves are a great way to support that balance.
