The Scary Side Effects of Using Bleach

Introduction

Do you use bleach in your home? I’m curious—let me know in the comments. In this video, I’ll go over seven scary side effects of using bleach and other chlorine-based products in your home, or even swimming in a chlorinated pool. This is something you’ll definitely want to know!

1. Displaces Iodine

Bleach can displace iodine. Since bleach contains chlorine, which is part of the halogen group on the periodic table, it can have negative effects on our health. Chlorine, in particular, can displace iodine—another halogen that is essential for our health. Iodine is crucial for proper thyroid function and overall well-being.

2. Thyroid Health

One of the risks of using chlorine bleach is that it can affect your thyroid. When chlorine displaces iodine, your thyroid may be compromised in its ability to function properly, as iodine is essential for the thyroid’s proper operation.

3. Breast Health

Another concerning side effect is its impact on breast health. Iodine plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy breasts, and one treatment for fibrocystic breast disease involves applying iodine directly to the breast to alleviate pain. Given iodine's importance for breast health, it's essential to consider how chlorine exposure may affect these levels.

4. Lungs - Asthma

Using bleach can have a negative impact on your lungs. If you're prone to asthma, respiratory spasms, or upper respiratory infections, bleach can be especially toxic. Inhaling bleach fumes or even being in a chlorinated pool environment, where the air is enclosed, can significantly harm your lung health.

5. Eyes - Conjunctivitis

Chlorine can also affect your eyes. If you’ve ever swum in a heavily chlorinated pool and experienced red, inflamed eyes or conjunctivitis, you’ve felt this side effect firsthand. It's another harmful impact of chlorine exposure.

6. Skin Rashes

While some might think chlorine is cleansing for the skin, I’m actually surprised that some doctors recommend chlorine bleach for pediatric patients with chronic skin issues like eczema—not something I would recommend. Chlorine, being a toxic halogen, can negatively impact your skin microbiome, leading to irritation and rashes.

7. Digestive Tract

One scary side effect of using bleach and chlorine is that it can disrupt your microbiome, negatively affecting your digestive health. Since over 80% of your immune system is linked to a healthy gut, this is especially important. It’s crucial to avoid chlorine and bleach whenever possible to protect your digestive and immune health.
