Whether you're dealing with an acute episode or struggling with chronic diarrhea related to gut health, these five tips can really make a difference.
There are many potential causes of diarrhea, so it's important to identify the root issue. However, a key goal in almost every case is improving your gut microbiome. A healthier gut often leads to fewer digestive problems—including diarrhea.
These five tips will guide you toward relief and better gut health overall.
Fiber helps by absorbing excess water in the digestive tract, which is often the root cause of diarrhea. When there's too much water in your system, it can lead to loose, watery stools. By adding more fiber to your diet, you can help bulk up the stool and slow things down, which may reduce or eliminate diarrhea.
Sometimes, diarrhea can be caused by unwanted organisms or imbalances in your gut microbiome. That’s where my favorite protocol, CABO, comes in. CABO stands for Cloves, Artemisia, Black Walnut, and Oregano—a powerful blend of herbal medicines.
The whole oregano plant, in particular, is incredibly effective at eliminating harmful bacteria, parasites, and even candida. I recommend using this protocol three to four times a year as a gentle cleanse to support a healthy, balanced microbiome and keep those unwanted bugs in check.
After completing the CABO protocol, it's a great idea to support your body with a full-body detox. Now, don’t let the word detox scare you—especially if you're already dealing with diarrhea. I get it—you're probably thinking, “Why would I want to flush things out even more?” But here's the thing: diarrhea can actually be a sign that your body is overloaded with toxins and trying to eliminate them rapidly through the digestive tract.
A proper detox, done the right way, doesn't just push things through faster—it helps your body gently eliminate toxins and restore balance. I use a specific protocol that combines carefully selected herbal medicines, all working together to reduce the toxic load on your system.
This approach supports and enhances the efficiency of your major detox organs: the liver, lungs, digestive tract, kidneys, skin (our largest external detox organ), lymphatic system, and blood. It’s a holistic reset that can make a big difference in your overall gut health and resilience.
Once you've done some cleansing—especially using the CABO protocol—it’s important to repopulate your gut with the good guys. I'm talking about probiotics. My favorite strains are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, both of which are powerful for restoring balance in the gut.
But it’s not just about supplements or dietary changes—nature plays a big role too. Spending more time outdoors, especially in natural environments like forests or parks, exposes you to healthy microorganisms that help inoculate your system. These microbes from the soil, air, and natural world contribute to a more diverse and resilient microbiome.
So remember: it’s not just about what you take, but also where you spend your time.
One of the most overlooked tools for improving gut health and reducing diarrhea is natural sunlight exposure—particularly on your abdomen. It might sound surprising, but your gut microbiome is actually light-sensitive. Just like your brain, your digestive system has internal clocks that rely on the natural light-dark cycle to stay in sync.
Many people struggle with gut issues because their circadian rhythms are off. Spending all day under artificial lighting—especially blue light—and staying exposed to screens at night can throw those rhythms out of balance. This disruption impacts not just your sleep but also your digestion and gut microbiome.
Getting outside daily and exposing your skin, especially your abdomen, to full-spectrum sunlight helps reset your internal clocks. It supports the alignment of your brain, organs, and digestive system with the natural rhythm of the day—which can be a game changer for gut health.
