Vitamin D is important for the health of our teeth, gums, and immune system. A deficiency in vitamin D can also increase the risk of lung infections, chronic lung issues, and high blood glucose levels. We need vitamin D to help stabilize blood sugar and support strong bones. Without enough vitamin D, calcium and other minerals don’t stay in the bones as they should, weakening them. Low vitamin D levels are also linked to fatigue, low mood, and depression. This is why, during the cold, dark winter months, many people feel down or even slip into depression due to the lack of sunlight and vitamin D. Additionally, high blood pressure can be another symptom of vitamin D deficiency. Muscle aches, back pain, and muscle weakness are also common signs of low vitamin D. Many people don’t realize that these issues could be related to a deficiency. So, what can we do about it? Let me share some tips for addressing vitamin D deficiency.
It's important to get as much sunlight exposure as possible, depending on where you live in the world and how close you are to the equator. We know that our ability to produce vitamin D in the skin decreases during certain seasons and times of the year, especially the farther we are from the equator. This is related to the Zenith angle of the sun. To stay informed, you can use various apps to check your location and the potential for vitamin D production based on the time of year. In the meantime, try to get as much natural sunlight as possible whenever you can.
Tip number two is to increase vitamin D-rich foods in your diet. One excellent source of vitamin D is mushrooms, especially those that have been exposed to sunlight, as they concentrate vitamin D. Wild salmon, sardines, tuna, and egg yolks also provide natural vitamin D, though in smaller amounts.
Tip number three is vitamin D3 supplements. While we may get some sunlight exposure and consume vitamin D-rich foods occasionally, it’s often still not enough. A high-quality D3 supplement is what you should look for, not D2. Ensure the supplement is well-absorbed and contains a natural fat, such as MCTs from coconut oil, to aid in proper absorption. Remember, vitamin D is not just a vitamin—it’s also a hormone, making it essential for overall health.
