Written by Dr Janine Bowring ND | May 8, 2025 7:10:39 PM

Introduction

Zinc deficiency is more common than you might think. Let's go through some of the most common signs and symptoms that may indicate you're not getting enough zinc.

1. Tiredness & Low Energy

  • Feeling exhausted, even after rest
  • Trouble concentrating or brain fog

2. Eye & Vision Problems

  • Blurry vision
  • Dry eyes

3. Loss of Taste or Smell

Often overlooked but strongly linked to zinc levels.

4. Dry or Problematic Skin

  • Acne, eczema or rashes
  • Wrinkles and signs of early aging
  • Zinc supports collagen production

5. Hair Changes

  • Thinning or hair loss
  • Dull or brittle texture

6. Weak Immune System

  • Frequent colds or infections
  • Zinc plays a key role in immune function

7. Blood Sugar Imbalance

  • Trouble managing blood glucose
  • Possible weight gain

8. Nail Issues

  • White spot on nails
  • Brittle or easily broken nails

9. Slow Wound Healing

  • Cuts and injuries take longer to heal than usual

What You Can Do

If you recognize several of these symptoms, it might be time to evaluate your zinc intake. This isn't always something your doctor tests for routinely.

Zinc Rich Foods:

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Oysters (one of the best sources)
  • Beef, lentils, chickpeas, and cashews

Zinc Supplements

If supplementing,  choose a highly absorbable form. Zinc bis-glycinate is my favorite for effectiveness and gentle digestion.
