Introduction
Living a long and healthy life is something we all aspire to. Here are 10 steps to help you live to 100 — and do it in a healthy way.
1. Healthy Diet
Okay, tip number one is, of course, to eat a healthy diet. This means cutting back on alcohol and incorporating more whole foods, which are packed with nutrients. Nutrient-dense foods are key to ensuring your body’s systems function optimally.
2. Sun
Get more sunlight exposure! This may be one of the easiest yet sometimes hardest things to do, especially since we tend to spend so much time indoors. Whenever you can, take the opportunity to get outside, even if you can't see the sun directly. Being under natural, full-spectrum light from the sun will do wonders for your health. Just remember, avoid wearing sunglasses or sunscreen, and try to expose your skin to as much natural light as possible — this may mean removing some of your clothing.
3. Grounding
Grounding is essential — we need Earth's electrons, which are one of the major sources of electrons for our body, along with the sun and our food. Grounding helps discharge excess protons and reduce inflammation in our body. To ground yourself, simply take off your shoes and socks, get outside, and connect with the Earth. You can also ground yourself by swimming in the ocean or a lake, as both provide that natural connection.
4. Movement
Living to 100 requires staying active. Every day, try to focus on mobility, movement, and exercise. Prioritize big, functional movements that support your knees, hips, ankles, feet, shoulders, and spine. Mobility is especially important as you age to maintain flexibility and prevent stiffness.
5. Timed Eating During the Day
Living to 100 also means eating at the right times of day. To keep it simple: eat when the sun is up. Eating after the sun sets or before it rises can disrupt your circadian rhythms, affecting your hormones, digestion, and microbiome. Everything in your body is timed to the light and dark cycle, so it's important to align your eating schedule with these natural rhythms for optimal health.
6. Prioritize Sleep
Living to 100 means prioritizing a good night's sleep. Just as you follow the sun's cycle by being awake during the day, as night falls, it's important to focus on maintaining a regular sleep schedule. Make sure your sleep environment is in complete darkness to support restful, restorative sleep.
7. Water
Staying hydrated is essential, and drinking high-quality water is key! Many people are chronically dehydrated, but it’s simple to fix — just ensure you're drinking enough water every day.
8. Hot Exposure
Allow your body to experience heat exposure, whether through a far infrared sauna or simply being outside on a hot, sunny day. Heat exposure triggers heat shock proteins, which are great for your cardiovascular health, metabolism, and detoxification. Sweating helps release fat-soluble toxins, making it an important practice for detox and overall health as you work toward living to 100.
9. Cold Exposure
Exposure to cold shock proteins is equally important for your overall health. It helps stimulate mitochondrial function, which plays a key role in longevity and maintaining long-term vitality.
10. Gratitude
Living to 100 means practicing gratitude. Being truly grateful for everything you have and for what you’re manifesting is essential. Cultivating gratitude not only improves your mindset but also plays a key role in achieving longevity.
